The top caring qualities
While we support our carers in expanding their skills and growing their care tool box with our training program, there are certain qualities that can’t be taught. To be a carer, you must be a naturally empathic person with a genuine concern for the wellbeing of others. Here are the top qualities we look for in carers:
Respectful
An ideal carer respects a person’s choices, home, and lifestyle. The care you provided is rooted in trust and respect because you believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, no matter their age or background. You understand that empowering an individual is at the heart of our caregiving services.
Reliable
Being reliable is a key part of providing quality and professional care. In fact, reliability goes hand in hand with being respectful.
Imagine how you would feel if someone constantly showed up late or didn’t do the things they said they would. It’s safe to assume you probably wouldn’t feel very respected.
While we understand that sometimes delays and unexpected events are inevitable, it’s important to communicate effectively so that the people we look after feel safe, secure, and respected.
Patient
While working in care is incredibly rewarding, it’s also not without its challenges. You’ll have to be flexible and able to adapt easily to changing circumstances. As you navigate obstacles, a good supply of patience will come in handy.
While you may be tempted to do a task on behalf of the person you’re caring for to save time, you’ll understand that it’s important to empower a person’s independence.
Observant
Being observant, alert, and on the ball is an essential component of providing good care. As you have regular contact with the person you’re looking after, it’s crucial that you keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. This could be something as simple as a trip hazard inside the home or noticing a significant change in health or mood.
Empathetic
Carers have an innate empathetic nature. The ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes is evident in the way you treat others. This allows you to understand the needs of the person you’re looking after and provide care that’s sensitive, tactful, and respectful.
